Alternative solutions

Femern A/S has developed various technical solutions for the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link. Within the context of a staggered inspection and comparison process, the variants suspension bridge, bored tunnel and cable-stayed bridge were subject to a detailed study. In addition to technical aspects, environmental and safety issues naturally played an important role in this process. In the first step, the various bridge designs and the various tunnel designs were each compared to one another. In the next step, the best bridge variant was compared to the best tunnel variant.

In November 2010, Femern A/S recommended building an immersed tunnel based on the results of this process up to this point.
