Decision in favour of Rødbyhavn

Around 20 locations signalled their interest to Femern A/S to provide land for a production site.

After a more detailed analysis of the documents provided by the respective candidates, Femern A/S reached the conclusion that Rødbyhavn would be the best location for the production site. This conclusion is based on the following aspects:

Environmental impact assessment
New EU regulations require that the environmental impact assessment of the Fehmarnbelt tunnel and the production site needed for its construction, be incorporated into the same analysis and into an overall plan approval procedure. On the basis of the two-year-long environmental assessment programme which was already conducted and which included the area around Rødbyhavn, Femern A/S already had all the data necessary to be able to integrate the production site into the approval application for the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link being consistent with environmental requirements.

Technical requirements and Risk minimisation
Rødbyhavn satisfies all of the technical requirements of a production site. The site is so large that the entire production of the tunnel elements can take place at this single location.

For Femern A/S, Rødbyhavn offers the lowest risks and the best management possibilities. The element transport risk is lowered by the proximity to the construction site. The risk of official complaints by local stakeholders during the approval process is also limited because the group of agencies, individuals and companies that are affected by the project is only enlarged to a limited extent. In the actual construction phase, a location nearby the alignment corridor offers Femern A/S the best conditions for continuous production monitoring and management.

It must be stressed that the selection of Rødbyhavn does not mean that other locations proposed as production sites would not be suitable. There is a series of locations that submitted serious and thoroughly planned proposals for setting up a production site which is greatly appreciated by Femern A/S.
