Each of these standard elements is approx. 217 m long, approx. 42 m wide and approx. 9 m high. One element weighs around 70,000 tons.
Separate road tubes with central gallery
The two road tubes in the standard elements are each approximately 11 m wide and are located on the west side of the tunnel. Each road has two driving lanes, an emergency lane and an edge strip.
A wide central gallery comprised of three levels runs around 2 m between these two road tubes The lower level houses the drainage pipes and water supply lines for hydrants and the fire protection system. The middle level is at the same height as the road and can be used both for maintenance personnel as well as a safety zone. Just like the lower level, the upper level is a supply gallery where the utility lines in particular run from the special elements to the operating systems in the tunnel.
Two separate rail tubes
The eastern side of the tunnel consists of two approximately 6 m wide rail tubes each of which contains a track with emergency walkways on either side. The tubes provide space for longitudinal ventilation and have dimensions large enough to guarantee safe passage of trains travelling at speeds of up to 200 km/h.
