Construction phase

How will the construction works be carried out?

The alignment proposed for the immersed tunnel passes east of the ferry harbours in Puttgarden and Rødbyhavn.

The Fehmarnbelt tunnel is made of individual elements cast onshore in a tailor made production facility set up specifically for this purpose in Rødbyhavn. The elements will subsequently be towed into position and lowered into a trench dredged in the sea bed. The trench will be backfilled and the sea bed restored. The work will not have a lasting impact on the marine environment.

Construction work will begin in 2015. The opening of the Fehmarnbelt tunnel is scheduled for 2021.

Safety for sea traffic
In order to reduce the risk of ship collisions during the construction phase, a VTS system (Vessel Traffic Service) to guide and inform the ship traffic will be established. This will substantially improve maritime safety for vessels passing through the Fehmarnbelt.

Dredging of tunnel trench
Dredging methods have been selected to minimise sediment spill so that turbidity of the bathing water is avoided. The trench will be dredged step by step from both sides, and planned to keep the impact on the surroundings and the environment within acceptable levels. Before immersion a bedding layer of gravel will be placed in the trench as a foundation for the tunnel elements.
