Femern A/S will secure optimal protection of the environment during the construction and operation of the fixed link.

Femern A/S is aware that construction and operation of infrastructural projects of the size of the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link will have effects on the environment. A series of regulations and requirements for planning and construction of the installation, however, will allow Femern A/S to ensure that negative environmental effects can be avoided or minimised as far as possible. Moreover, the positive experience gained in the construction of the fixed links across the Great Belt and the Øresund will also be utilised. On those occasions it proved possible to minimise or even avoid environmental conflicts.

Protection of the environment has been carefully considered in the planning phases to date. For example, between 1995 and 1999, preliminary environmental investigations were carried out in the context of the feasibility studies. Various environment-related, detailed issues were additionally investigated in 2005, and in 2006 there was an environmental consultation process.

To this end, the entire body of existing knowledge in terms of possible environmental consequences of the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link was compiled into an environmental consultation report. This was published at the beginning of 2006, and government agencies, interested associations and the public in Denmark and Germany were asked to provide their stances. In the context of this public consultation and involvement phase, numerous responses were received from government agencies, interested associations and from the public of both countries. These answers are summarised in a final results report, to which the Ministers of Transport of both states have responded.
