Ferry services are unlikely to continue

Traffic forecasts for Fehmarnbelt indicate that ferry services between Rødby and Puttgarden will be discontinued after the opening of the fixed link. This decision, however, will be up to the ferry operators themselves.

Experience from Storebælt and Øresund shows that operating ferries alongside a fixed link is not financially viable.

The ferry company operating the Storebælt ferries discontinued operations on Storebælt’s opening day in 1998 and the ferries across Øresund immediately south of the Øresund Bridge stopped operating seven months after the link’s opening.
