A safe tunnel

The Fehmarnbelt tunnel will not only be one of the longest tunnels of its kind – it will also be one of the safest and most advanced. It will also be safer than equivalent motorways or railways on land.

There will be no oncoming traffic, no slip roads or impediments due to weather conditions or darkness. Automatic ventilation systems will ensure permanent air quality and visibility in the tunnel.

Emergency lanes throughout the tunnel
Both road tubes will be equipped with emergency lanes and the tunnel will be monitored on an ongoing basis by means of a comprehensive monitoring and traffic control system, including dynamic signage and radio communication that will provide motorists with essential information about their journey and with accident warnings.

Emergency exits to a safe neighbouring tube are located at 108 m intervals in the conceptual design and there will be emergency stations with firefighting equipment and direct phone links to the control centre every 54 m.

Fire insulated
The tunnel’s ceiling and walls will be fire insulated and the entire tunnel equipped with a fire extinguishing system that will keep a fire under control until the fire brigade and other emergency services arrive at the scene.
