Opinion poll: Population recognises opportunities in the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link

Date: 31.05.2010
North Germans and Danes are increasingly recognising the opportunities that a fixed link across the Fehmarnbelt offers for the economy and tourism.

This is the result of a representative survey conducted by the opinion research institute TNS Infratest (in Denmark TNS Gallup) on behalf of Femern A/S in the spring of 2010 and which is being published today by Femern A/S in its newsletter.

The effects of the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link are viewed completely positively on both sides of the belt. 68 percent of the North Germans and 64 percent of the Danes believe that their region will benefit from this link.

Furthermore, a majority of 53 percent of the North German population and even 74 percent of the Danes are convinced that the fixed link will create jobs. These values have risen in Germany as well as in Denmark since the last survey was conducted in 2009.

Potential is also seen for the tourism sector. 75 percent of the Danes and 80 percent of the North Germans believe that tourism between the two countries will increase as a result of the fixed link.

Especially on the German side, as in the past there are concerns that tourism will suffer in the immediate vicinity of the link, but they have also decreased. While in 2009, 37 percent still feared a negative influence on tourism on Fehmarn, it was 32 percent in 2010.

Ajs Dam, Head of Corporate Communications at Femern A/S, is pleased about these results: "We are happy that the people in the region agree to the political vision of a fixed link across the Fehmarnbelt expressed by the state treaty and recognise the opportunities of this major cross-border project."
