Project

Technical solutions

For the 19-kilometre long coast-to-coast connection, a number of technical solutions are currently being investigated.

The state treaty establishes that, according to the existing knowledge, the preferred technical solution for the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link is a cable-stayed bridge. Futhermore an immersed tunnel is the preferred alternative solution. On no account does this represent a preliminary decision. In fact, a number of bridge solutions and immersed tunnel options are currently being studied thoroughly and equally. These studies focus greatly on the environmental and safety issues associated with the project.

The final technical solution and route planning will only be decided upon once the assessments have been completed according to the approval procedures. Both bridge and tunnel options include a four-lane motorway and a double track electrified rail connection, the so-called 4+2 solution.

How long will the fixed link be?

The fixed link will be approximately 19 km long and consist of a four-lane motorway and a double track railway line.
