Femern A/S will obtain loans in the international financial market. The Danish state will be the guarantor for this credit. Due to these guarantees, the loans will be assumed under the same conditions, which are available to the Danish state.
The debt will not be repaid by the Danish taxpayers, but by means of toll fees collected from users of the fixed link. The tolls for passing the fixed link are in the financial analysis assumed to be equal to the average ferry fares on the ferry service between Rødby and Puttgarden(see also Financial calculations).
The repayment period for the coast-to-coast segment has been estimated at about 25 years from the time of opening. Reckoned the Danish land work the complete debt will be repaid in 30 years.
The fixed link across the Fehmarnbelt is a high-priority project in the context of the expansion of a trans-European transport network. Therefore the European Commission supports the project within the framework of the programme for the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The Commission has already approved funds for the period from 2007 to 2013 of 339 million Euro. This corresponds to around 25 percent of expenditures estimated for the plan up until 2013. For the period from 2014 to 2020, EU support will also be requested.
