Recordings of green frogs, fish and fry, tagging and counting of porpoises, grey seals, birds and bats, water temperatures, salinity and wave heights: these are just some of the broad range of environmental data that Femern A/S, together with its environmental consultants, is about to publish.
Between 2008 and 2010, more than 100 environmentalists have undertaken field studies in seven key areas: hydrography, marine biology, fish, birds, mammals, archaeology and the environment on land.
With the completion of the data gathering, the environmentally-focused tasks are now moving from outdoors into an office environment. The seven consultancy firms currently have some 50 people working on reporting and evaluating data on behalf of Femern A/S.
The environmental consultants' work will result in a number of technical background reports which, between them, will present all collected data. On the basis of the technical reports, Femern A/S will prepare a comprehensive review consisting of assessments of the project's environmental impact.
In Denmark, the review will provide the basis for the authorities' EIA consultation process. In Germany, the review of the environmental conditions will form part of the overall application to the authorities for project approval. The reporting on environmental conditions is expected to be completed in the spring of 2012.
Video on the environment
Many environmental studies have included video footage in the field. Part of the footage has been used to produce eight small videos on the past two years' environmental work in and around the Fehmarnbelt.
Besides a general introduction to the environmental work, each video deals with a separate topic, i.e. hydrography, marine biology, birds, fish, mammals and flora and fauna on land.
The videos can be viewed on this site. Please also refer to the article entitled: Biologist and photographer with a passion for nature
