Embankments up to 10 metres high around the plant will provide effective noise reduction for the surrounding area. After the construction period, the production plant will be removed and the area restored, using the embankments as landfill. All the material for the embankments and landfill along the coast comes from excavation of the sea bed, where the tunnel will be located. The final design of the production plant, access roads and landfill, plus the extent of the temporary embankments, have not yet been decided. Femern A/S is continuing to work on optimising all factors relating to the plant.
How tunnel elements are built
The concrete elements are produced in a closed hall so that production can take place whatever the wind and weather. An element consists of several segments that are cast together as they are produced. When a segment has been cast, it is pushed out of the production hall. The production of a new segment can then begin in the closed hall. The batch production continues in this way until a length of 217 m, for a standard element, has been achieved. The finished element is pushed out into a dry dock that is filled with water until the element floats. The element is then dragged via a lock out into a basin in which the water level is the same as in the Fehmarnbelt itself. The element is transported from the basin by tugs for immersion and positioning in the tunnel alignment.
