Femern A/S has begun planning the large construction contracts for an immersed tunnel under the Fehmarnbelt. The task includes ensuring optimal competition between construction consortia when the project is put out to international tender.

Copenhagen and Hamburg show their clear commitment to the Fehmarnbelt fixed link.

The experts working on the Fehmarnbelt link have a challenging task ahead of them. They have been asked to produce carbon accounts spanning a period of 120 years for both the construction phase and traffic. The link is expected to become carbon-neutral within 30 years.

Northern Germany is getting in position to reap the benefits of the Fehmarnbelt fixed link. In January 2012 Lübeck and Eastern Holstein are very likely to join the regional cooperation platform of the greater Hamburg region.

In coming issues of the newsletter, we will publish a series of articles under the title "World Class Links"; looking at major tunnels and bridges around the world. Naturally, we will start with the world's longest tunnel: the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland. This railway tunnel has been bored through the Alps and is 57 km long.

The Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link project contains a huge amount of facts and figures. The newsletter will now include the regular feature "Did you know ...", where we will publish selected facts about the project.
