The fixed link across the Fehmarnbelt between Germany and Denmark will be sited in a corridor running east of the ferry ports of Puttgarden and Rødbyhavn.
This is Femern A/S' conclusion following an 18 month long process during which several options were looked at.
From among the investigated alternatives, Femern A/S now believes that the alignment corridor east of the ferry ports will have the least impact on the area’s cultural heritage, environment and people. As a result, the chosen corridor will provide the basis for further planning work. The corridor for the coast-to-coast link is approximately 1200 m wide.
The proposed alignments within the corridor relate to the two conceptual designs for the tunnel and bridge published by Femern A/S in November 2010. The project's precise alignment will be determined when the German authorities have approved the project and the Danish parliament has passed the necessary Construction Act. This is expected to happen in 2013.
All in all, 20 tunnel and 16 bridge alignments were examined. These investigations included the potential alternatives in an approx. 4-7 km wide area in the Fehmarnbelt between Denmark and Germany, i.e. both east and west of the two ferry ports at Rødbyhavn and Puttgarden.
Investigations in this area have also extended some km inland on both Lolland and Fehmarn where the fixed link will connect to existing roads and rail lines.
