Interest in hosting the production sites for a future Fehmarn tunnel or bridge is substantial. No fewer than 19 towns, cities or ports have informed Femern A/S of their interest in being considered as locations for such sites.
Over the next few months, Femern A/S will enter into a dialogue with each of the towns and cities to clarify a range of technical issues. These issues include the size and suitability of the areas concerned, depth of water, environmental conditions, hinterland infrastructure, local resident considerations etc.
”The planning of the solution for both a tunnel and a cable-stayed bridge has progressed and we now know many more details about the environmental aspects of the project,” says Femern A/S Technical Director, Peter Lundhus. "We also know more details about the requirements for the production sites. As a result, we’re now ready to talk to the individual ports to establish their suitability as production sites for tunnel or bridge elements.”
Although an immersed tunnel is the preferred solution for a fixed Fehmarnbelt link, the environmental assessment of a possible bridge solution is proceeding. Consequently, the environmental conditions around the production sites for both a bridge and tunnel solution are being examined further. The final choice of solution will be made in connection with the adoption of a Construction Act in Denmark.
The 19 locations that have expressed a wish to be considered as production sites are: Grenå, Kalundborg, Copenhagen (Frihavnen), Nyborg, Odense/Lindø, Orehoved (Guldborgsund), Spodsbjerg, Stigsnæs, Sydlollands kyst (Rødbyhavn), Vordingborg and Aabenraa as well as the port of Malmø in Sweden. In Germany, the cities in question are Kiel, Lübeck, Rendsburg and Rostock, and in Poland, Gdansk, Swinoujscie and Szczecin.
Nakskov and Bandholm are offering to make quays and land available for service harbours for the contractors.
The most suitable locations – including from a planning perspective – will be clarified during 2011.
