Latest opinion poll: Growing popularity of the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link as a driver of development

Date: 08.04.2011
Public opinion surrounding the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link is largely positive both in Germany and Denmark, especially with respect to the project’s economic impacts. This was the find-ing of a representative survey conducted by TNS Infratest for Femern A/S in March 2011 with 2,000 respondents in Northern Germany and 1,005 in Denmark.

Half of all the Danes surveyed (46 percent) reported that they have a positive attitude towards the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link. 36 percent of the respondents are neutral and only 17 percent are critical of the project. The project’s supporters are thus clearly in the majority, outnumbering its critics by a ratio of 3:1. In Northern Germany, the respondents who reported having a neutral attitude toward the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link represented the largest group (46 percent). However, here too, one third of those surveyed are in favour of the project (33 percent) and only 19 percent are against it.

The economic momentum coming from the creation of new jobs is regarded in a more positive light by the public both north and south of the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link. More than half of those surveyed in Northern Germany (56 percent) and three quarters of those surveyed in Denmark (74 percent) believe that the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link will create more new jobs in the region. The North Germans are more positive than the Danes about the impacts of the project on regional development, with 72 percent of the North Germans and 66 percent of the Danes believing the impacts will be positive.

The degree of familiarity with the project has further increased since last year. In 2010, 36 percent of those surveyed in Northern Germany and 30 percent of those in Denmark felt well informed about the project. According to the recent 2011 survey, 40 percent on the German side and 38 percent on the Danish side now feel well informed.

The Director of Corporate Communication at Femern A/S, Ajs Dam, is pleased that the project’s acceptance within the general public has continued to grow from year to year: “It’s great to see that many people in the region approve of the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link. We will continue to provide the public with comprehensive information about the project and encourage a dialogue with them. The positive results of this survey motivate us even more to continue these efforts.”
