Engineering - How to build a tunnel
Updated September 25 2012

The Fehmarnbelt Tunnel will be constructed from prefabricated elements. These elements will be produced in a purpose-built factory onshore in Rødbyhavn and towed to the alignment for immersion in an excavated trench on the seabed.

There are two types of tunnel elements: standard elements and special elements. Standard elements will represent the cross-section for most of the immersed tunnel. All standard elements will be approximately 217 m long and weigh some 70,000 t each.

On this page we inform you about the technical details concerning the construction of a tunnel between Germany and Denmark.
